Introduction to Safety & Health in NUS

The National University of Singapore (NUS) is committed to ensuring a high standard of safety and health (S&H) for its staff, students, contractors and visitors to the campus in association with its research, teaching and service activities. This commitment is demonstrated through implementation of the following policy statements.

Policy Statements

1. Legal Compliance

NUS is committed to comply with all applicable safety and health legislation, guidelines and standards that it subscribes to; and other corporate policies that it adopts which are related to its S&H hazards.

2. Implementation of Safety and Health Management System and Programmes

NUS shall proactively identify, assess and control the S&H hazards associated with its activities to prevent injuries and ill health to NUS staff, students and visitors. This shall be achieved through the implementation of an S&H management system and various S&H programmes, standards and directives at the University, faculties and departments. The specific requirements for managing S&H risks are detailed in the various NUS S&H manuals.

3. Safety Culture

NUS is committed to building a positive S&H culture and learning experience for all NUS staff and students through the adoption of S&H best practices and systems.

4. Regular Review
The University’s S&H management system shall be reviewed periodically to ensure its relevance and effectiveness in order to achieve improvement in its S&H performance.
   

Employees' Responsibilities

Academic and administrative personnel with supervisory and/or teaching roles must ensure that safety system & procedures are developed and implemented to prevent injury & ill-health, protect University’s properties and the environment.

Every employee shall be responsible for:

Keeping themselves informed of conditions affecting their safety and health;

Participating in training programmes provided by their supervisors, instructors and ORMC (if applicable);

listing

Adhering to safety and health practices in their workplace, classroom & laboratory;and

listing

Reporting to their supervisors or instructors of serious hazards in the workplace, classroom or laboratory

   

Office of Risk Management and Compliance (ORMC)

The Safety & Health Unit, Office of Risk Management and Compliance (ORMC) is the corporate office with oversight of safety & health matters and environmental compliance in NUS.

ORMC supports the NUS mission by ensuring university activities, in particular, high-risk activities such as construction, laboratory and workshop-based activities, and university and student events are conducted safely so as to prevent harm, injury or ill health from befalling the people undertaking such activities. ORMC equips staff and students with the knowledge and skills to manage safety and health matters in their own respective areas.

ORMC provides a range of services to meet the needs of our stakeholders. These include policy formulation, programme development, advisory services, training, safety promotion, safety audits and inspections and incident management. ORMC is looking forward to working with you in building a positive safety and health culture at NUS.
