Choose your SHMS certification status
Your status determines the primary form for a new grant-based project. Select the pathway that applies to you.
Before submitting: also confirm whether the project involves animal research, field research, diving research or regulated materials, as additional forms may be required.
Not SHMS certified
Prepare a Project Risk Assessment
Use this pathway when starting a new research grant without certification under the SHMS for Academic Supervisors scheme.
Complete the applicable Project Risk Assessment and hazard-specific forms in iRIMS-IBC.
Add the relevant forms for animal, field or diving research and work involving regulated materials.
Life-science projects route to IBC; non-life-science projects route to ILSC. BSL3 and ABSL3 work routes to the relevant specialist committee.
SHMS certified
Notify and Complete Lab Certification Form
Certified PIs generally use the streamlined Lab Certification route for each new grant-based project.
Notify ORMC of the new grant-based project through the applicable research-compliance process.
Submit the Lab Certification Form in iRIMS-IBC instead of individual project hazard forms.
Add the relevant forms where the project involves animal work or regulated materials.
Complete the required declarations and route the application for institutional review.
Certification does not remove all submission requirements. Animal work, regulated materials and significant changes may require additional forms or amendments.

Shared submission process
Submit, respond and obtain approval
After preparing the forms required for your pathway, complete the shared submission and review process in iRIMS-IBC.
Complete selected forms
Provide the project, personnel, activity, material and control information requested in each applicable form.
Submit online
Submit the completed application in iRIMS-IBC (Hazard Safety).
Respond to review
Address reviewer comments, amend the application and provide supporting information where requested.
Obtain approval
Receive approval from the relevant institutional safety committee before proceeding with the work.
Existing applications
Amendments and management of change
Submit an amendment for significant changes to an approved protocol, practices, materials, personnel or environment, including the introduction of animal work.
Previously approved in iORC
These project risk assessments have been migrated. Submit the amendment in iRIMS-IBC (Hazard Safety).
Older iORC approval
Submit a new project risk assessment in iRIMS-IBC (Hazard Safety) and quote the previously approved iORC reference number.
