NUS General Laboratory Safety and Health Programme


NUS is committed to a high standard of safety in its laboratories and will make all reasonable efforts to adopt laboratory best practices to protect the safety and health of the University staff, students and visitors on campus from the hazards associated with general laboratory operation.

The Office of Risk Management and Compliance (ORMC) is the general administrator of this programme by providing directives, standards, forms and checklist with regards to general laboratory safety.

FAQs

Q1: Where can I check if I would like to know the design requirements for all new construction, additions and alterations work of laboratories?
Ans: Refer to NUS Laboratory Design Standard to obtain information on the design requirements for laboratories.

Q2: What should I do if I want to engage contractor to conduct work activities in the laboratory?
Ans: Refer to ‘Contractor Management’ in General Laboratory Safety and Health Manual section 8.12, as it states the roles and responsibilities, briefing checklist and type of document required from the contractor.

Q3: What should I do to manage safety and health while working in a shared laboratory and frequently use shared equipment?
Ans: Refer to ‘Safe Use of Shared Equipment’ and ‘Safety Guidelines for Bench-Work in Shared Laboratories’ in the General Laboratory Safety and Health Manual section 8.7 and 8.8 respectively. These sections provide information on how the use of shared equipment and hazards from various laboratory groups in the shared laboratory can be safely managed.

Q4: What do I need to do if I am moving to another laboratory space due to renovation works in my current laboratory?
Ans: It will be necessary to decommission the laboratory during the relocation to ensure that the vacated laboratory space is free of hazardous materials. Refer to ‘Laboratory Decommissioning’ in the General Laboratory Safety and Health Manual section 8.11. Do note that it will be necessary for the Faculty Safety and Health Officer to commission the laboratory space you are moving into before the commencement of research work.
