NUS is committed to a high standard of safety and health
for staff and students conducting field research
activities. As part of this commitment, a field research
safety programme was developed that details the best
practices that staff and students should follow when
conducting field research.
The Office of Risk Management and Compliance (ORMC) is the
overall programme manager of the NUS Field Research Safety
Programme. The details of this programme and supporting
guidelines, checklists and training resources are found
below. All staff and students conducting field research
activities are strongly encouraged to do the following:
-
Refer to the NUS Safety & Health Guidelines for
Field Trips;
-
Complete the Online Field Research Safety Training
(OSHGEN08);
-
Conduct the necessary risk assessments, develop the
necessary standard operating procedures, etc., and
submit them to the Principal Investigator, Head of
Department, and/or ORMC for approval (where applicable);
-
Where necessary, complete the relevant and applicable
vaccinations/medical consultation, etc., at Occupational
Health Clinic or University Health Centre (UHC) prior to
field research activity;
-
Obtain the relevant approvals/permits from authorities
(where relevant) for use of premises or collection of
samples and/or import of samples;
-
Develop an emergency response and incident management
plan for the specific field research activity and the
location of the field research; and
-
Report any incident or accident promptly to ORMC via the
Accident & Incident Management System (AIMS) within
24 hours.
