Annual Safety & Health Performance Award Ceremony 2014/2015


The Annual Safety and Health Performance Award (ASHPA) ceremony 2015 is to recognize and reward Departments and individuals that have performed well in safety and health or have contributed to safety excellence on campus.

ASHPA Theme

This year the theme of ASHPA was “Celebrating People and Partnerships”. The Award ceremony focused on celebrating all the individuals who tirelessly worked for enhancing safety in their respective Offices, Halls, Departments and Institutes. It was a moment of celebration for the tripartite partnership of OSHE, Senior Management and Departments in the NUS Journey of safety excellence.

ASHPA Presentation Ceremony

Now into its 10th year, the NUS Annual Safety and Health Performance Award honors and recognizes Departments for their contributions and outstanding achievements in developing and maintaining efficient safety and health management systems. Organized by office of Safety, Health and Environment (OSHE), the award ceremony was held at the luncheon in Della & Seng Gee Guild Hall on the 15th of April 2015. The occasion was presided over by the Guest of Honor Prof. Tan Chorh Chuan, NUS President. Other distinguished guests included NUS Provost, Professor Tan Eng Chye; Deputy President (Research and Technology), Professor Barry Halliwell; Deputy President (Administration), Mr. Joseph Mullinix. The audience included Deans, Directors, Heads of Departments, Safety committee members and representatives of various Departments, Institutes and Halls. This year 25 Departments took part in the ASHPA challenge and were deservedly rewarded for their efforts. Departments were assessed based on their safety and health management systems and their safety and health performance over the reviewing period of 2 Jan 2014 to 31 Dec 2014. Seven Departments won the commendation awards and 17 Departments/Institute/Halls won the commitment awards. For details of the categories and awards, please click here.

The award ceremony begun with a musical piece by the Conservatory String Quartet of the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, who played Mozart’s Divertimento in D major, K.136 from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Rin Kei Mei. Dr. Peck Thian Guan, Director of the Office of Safety and Health welcomed all the participants and congratulated them on embarking on the NUS safety journey which was followed by the award presentation. The awards for commitment and certificate of participation was presented by Prof. Tan Eng Chye, NUS Provost, Prof. Barry Halliwell, Deputy President (Research & Technology) and Mr. Mullinix, Deputy President (Administration). The commendation awards were presented to the award winners by Prof. Tan Chorh Chuan, NUS President. The Presentation of award plaques to the winners was accompanied by sumptuous lunch for the participants. During the luncheon, the audience were treated to a photo montage depicting the key drivers of safety in their departments.

Distinguished Safety & Health Leadership Award and Outstanding Safety & Health Champion Award

There were also two special individual awards presented alongside the Annual Safety and Health Performance Awards this year. One for the “Distinguished Safety & Health Leadership Award” and the second for the “Outstanding Safety & Health Champion Award”.

These two awards are an opportunity for OSHE to recognize leaders who have gone beyond the call of duty, working in strong partnership with OSHE, to pursue the safety agenda for NUS. This year the award for Outstanding Safety & Health Champion Award went to A/Prof Sim Tiow Suan, a faculty member in Department of Microbiology and Assistant Dean in NUS Medicine Dean’s Office. A/Prof Sim was instrumental in spearheading a number of safety initiatives in NUS Medicine, and chairing key safety committees in the school - research safety and MD 1 building safety committee.

The Distinguished Safety & Health Leadership Award was awarded to Prof. Barry Halliwell, Deputy President (Research and Technology) for his leadership in safety for the research cluster in NUS. Under Prof Halliwell’s leadership, NUS has not only become a research intensive university but one where research is done safely and ethically. Mr. Saravanan, Head of the Safety and Health Management Division of OSHE gave a brief summary of the achievements of the two award winners. The awards were presented to the winners by Prof. Tan Chorh Chuan, NUS President.

Closing Address

The closing address was the highlight of the occasion when NUS President personally thanked the Departments for their commitment towards safety. The President emphasized the policies that Senior Management has adopted to change mindsets of individuals such as safety KPI’s for Deans and HODs to promote ownership. NUS President reiterated “We will redouble our efforts to create a safe and healthy campus and to achieve our longer term aspiration to have ‘no injuries or illness’ arising from work related activities”.
