In our age of ever-advancing Information, Communication and Technology, a substantial part of our digital lifestyle has shifted from Internet websites into our mobile devices today. This is further encouraged by the pervasiveness of social networking phenomenon like Facebook, Twitter etc., to drive a demand to download and adopt the most innovative mobile applications that integrates into our lives in these social mediums. The prevalence of social games in social networking media also contributed significantly to the entertainment impacts of mobile applications like FOURSQUARE. Users of foursquare could perform simple “check-ins” and view/provide resourceful “tips” specific to these locations, where such

activities can be integrated into instant publishing via Facebook and Twitter. Fun could be derived by topping each other’s tally boards competitively or they can earn titles of “mayor”( an honour for being the person with the highest check-ins) of their favourite locations. After a substantial number of times of check-ins at various locations, it enables users to unlock “badges” (a reward of serial visitation accomplishments) to add on to their milestones in visiting locations. With GPS capabilities and social game-like features, Foursquare has emerged as an established free-to-download mobile application, for providing not merely mindless entertainment but also valuable location-based feedback/tips and interactivity of information. Unlike most entertainment games found in mobile technologies today, the usage of Foursquare has
transcended beyond the mindless fun and social connections most users established via the usual social mediums.Foursquare could now be effectively used as a convenient resource on mobile devices to learn about locations of visit in the University, at the same time, empowering members of the NUS community to leave useful tips/feedbacks/photos for one another to follow, explore and add on.

NUS Computer Centre has recently established Foursquare as a viable mobile application in the hope of soliciting users’ valuable feedback and to nurture NUS students in forming a virtual peer-to-peer community for self-help and resource sharing. By completing a simple check-in to unlock specials found in the 4 premises (ThinkLab, Mac Commons, PC Commons and Collaborative Commons), staff and students will be encouraged to continue their prolific visitations to the facilities and offer useful tips which reinforce the solidarity of our social community.
