Objectives: At the end of the programme, participants are expected to achieve the following objectives:
  • Appreciate the rationale for punishment and the historical use of imprisonment as a penal strategy;
  • Understanding the home-prison nexus and alternative experimentation with penal strategies against the backdrop of the ‘what works’ question;
  • Appreciate the principles that inform the organization of imprisonment and the penal institution;
  • Application of the principle of ‘normalisation’ with targetted population;
  • Understanding prisons as a total institution and its impact on the construction and management of a prison identity;
  • Appreciate the value of considering alternatives to punishment for clients at risk;
  • Review of some of the latest and key research works in the fields of offender rehabilitation and reintegration;
Application: At the end of the workshop, participants are expected to be able to do the following:
  • Develop Rehabiliation programmes rather than Institutionalisating their clients;
  • Identify and design appropriate programme specific to the profile of the offenders;
  • Take greater emphasis on evaluating rehabilitation and reintegration work;
  • Create a stronger aftercare programme.
