Our microbiomes, the communities of microscopic organisms that live in and on us, shape our development from birth and play a pivotal role in both health and disease. Our microbiomes can be nurtured through everyday choices, including consumption of probiotics, prebiotics and antibiotics, and have a bearing on how gracefully we mature and age. The workshop aims to educate/equip participants with knowledge and basic skills in the following healthcare topics: 1. Introduction to what microbiomes are 2. Bacterial DNA (metagenomic) sequencing 3. Microbiomes effect on health (development) and disease 4. Probiotics and prebiotics in food 5. Technics to prepare home-made probiotic drinks 6. Influence of skin microbiomes on beauty and home hygiene 7. Appreciation of microbiome research in science/medicine Training will be conducted in the form of seminars (small group lectures with Q&A), laboratory demonstrations and hands-on preparation of probiotic drinks. At the end of the course, the participants should be able to effectively communicate the following: 1. What comprises a microbiome and where these microbial communities can be found 2. The principles of microbiome sequencing 3. The importance of microbiomes in human development and disease 4. The difference between prebiotics and probiotics and their benefits in diet 5.
