Objectives

1.Student will be challenged to think about humankind’s relationship with the sea.2.Students will develop their writing skills across a range of different types of written work.3.Students will gain some familiarity with aspects of maritime history, oceanic studies, and issues relating to governance of the sea.4.Students will develop an appreciation of the interactions between social, political and economic factors and their links to piractical activities.5.Students will hone their ability to think critically about scholarly and popular culture representations relating to piracy and the maritime realm.6.This course enables students to have a good understanding of what constitutes piracy in different eras and the reasons why defining piracy is often a difficult task.7.Students will become familiar with a wide range of sources (from historical to contemporary) and this will enable them to consider the links between past and present when examining the maritime world.
