Objectives
Cities like Singapore are growing quickly, and with that growth comes a mix of opportunity and complexity. As more people live, work, and move through urban spaces, governments and industries are under increasing pressure to make cities both efficient and environmentally responsible. These challenges can’t be solved by engineering or planning alone—they require solid economic thinking too.
This Graduate Certificate was created to support professionals who are actively involved in shaping urban policies or managing environmental trade-offs. Whether they work in public agencies, infrastructure development, or consulting, participants in the programme will examine how economics can be used to guide real decisions about land use, transport, sustainability, and investment.
Rather than relying on abstract theory, the curriculum brings in examples from Singapore and other cities to highlight how policy works in practice. Topics such as emissions pricing, housing affordability, public transport funding, and green infrastructure planning will be discussed through an economic lens—focusing on costs, benefits, and incentives.
For many, this course may also serve as a stepping stone toward deeper academic engagement. It provides a way to gain exposure to graduate-level study at NUS while picking up practical skills that can be applied immediately in professional contexts.
